They have a lot of similarities, indeed. They are basically using the same machine and architecture, so they offer the equal level of cleaning performance. Roomba 870 as well as Roomba 880 feature the 3-Stage Cleaning System, a combination of suction, brushing, and agitation to deliver a decent clean-up. Both have identical compact size and low-profile design so that both can navigate under furniture. You can simply push the Clean button whenever you need the job done, or schedule the task up to seven times a week.

The first noticeable difference is the color. Roomba 870 has a grayish outer circle while Roomba 880 is entirely black. The second difference is that Roomba 880 has one additional feature which does not exist in Roomba 870, named Multi-Room Navigation. It has two modes, Lighthouse and Virtual Wall. In Lighthouse mode, the robot will clean one room entirely before moving to the other room. On the contrary, in Virtual Wall mode, the robot will only clean a certain area and stay away from the rest.
